A visual montage cuts together fragments of food industrialisation, standardisation, privatisation, the development of preservatives, livestock and the control of food through global logistics. In this graphic, challenges around food scarcity are embedded within military operations to map dynamics of power and control within the everyday food sector and beyond, in extreme conditions, where food becomes a strategic weapon – directing or blocking food supplies, occupying infrastructure or targeting grain silos.

The map of worldwide hunger (2015 FAO Hunger Map) appears similar to the map of ongoing conflicts; these two maps, merged together, highlight the commonality of food scarcity and conflict. The industrialisation and logistics around food lead on the other hand to an abundance of food in the wealthy and conflict-free zones, such as Europe. The EU produces an annual 88 million tonnes of food waste, which state the abundance of food - here.

While ‘enough food is produced globally’, as the FAO states, ‘there are still 800 million hungry people worldwide’. These systemic faults of an industrialised food supplychain and the misuse of food as a weapon for power are visualised in the largescale montage, Food + War; An artistic compilation of media coverages of the past ten years frame correlations between the two industries of food and war and the resulting social impacts.
